Zebrafish are omnivorous and can eat a wide variety of foods. Their favorite type of food is animal-based feed, commonly including fish worms, brine shrimp, earthworms, red worms, yellow mealworms, lean meat, animal organs, etc. Additionally, plant-based feed such as tender vegetable leaves, cucumbers, and carrots can be fed occasionally. Synthetic feeds can also be used. If possible, it is best to use special fish food designed specifically for zebrafish.
1. What Do Zebrafish Eat?
Zebrafish are omnivorous, so they can eat a variety of feeds, including animal-based, plant-based, and synthetic feeds.
Animal-based feed is their preferred type of food, and keepers can feed it as their main diet. Suitable animal-based feeds for zebrafish include brine shrimp, red worms, nematodes, yellow mealworms, mealworms, earthworms, animal organs, etc. These foods are rich in protein and fat, which help promote growth and development.
Plant-based feed is rich in vitamins and trace elements, so keepers can feed it as supplementary food. Common plant-based feeds include cucumbers, carrots, and tender leaves of green leafy vegetables.
Synthetic feed provides a more balanced nutrition, but it cannot meet all of their daily requirements. Therefore, it is best to feed it in combination with animal-based feed. Additionally, it is recommended to choose special feed for zebrafish if available.
2. How to Feed Zebrafish?
Zebrafish are small in size and do not consume a large amount of food. Keepers can feed them 1-2 times a day, with each feeding amount that can be consumed in about 3-5 minutes. For young zebrafish, it is better to feed smaller amounts more frequently, ideally feeding them once in the morning, once at noon, and once in the evening. Each feeding should only fill about 60% of their capacity. After feeding, keepers should promptly remove any leftover food from the tank to avoid water pollution.
