I. What Do Betta Fish Eat?
- Animal-based Feed: Betta fish are carnivorous and prefer live feed such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, mealworms, fish worms, nematodes, water fleas, mosquito larvae, and more. During regular feeding, you can also provide lean meat and animal internal organs. Live feed may carry parasites, so it is important to disinfect or sterilize it before feeding.
- Plant-based Feed: Betta fish are not particularly fond of plant-based foods, but they should still be fed regularly. Plant feed contains essential vitamins and trace elements that help balance their nutrition. Suitable plant-based foods for Betta fish include water algae, aquatic plants, moss, spinach leaves, cabbage leaves, fruits, etc.
- Synthetic Feed: Commercial feed is convenient and nutritionally complete. Owners can choose either flake or pellet feeds for Betta fish.
II. How to Feed Betta Fish?
- Young Fish: For young Betta fish, more live feed should be given, and less vegetable or synthetic feed. They require a higher amount of fat and protein at this stage, so feeding twice a day is recommended.
- Adult Fish: Once Betta fish reach adulthood, you can reduce the amount of live feed and focus more on synthetic feed. Their food requirements are not as high, so feeding once a day is sufficient.
