How to Raise a Large Red-eared Slider

How to Raise a Large Red-eared Slider

Expert’s Answer

Container: The large red-eared slider has a relatively large body, so it’s best to prepare a container that is at least four times larger than its size for raising them. This will allow them to move around more freely.

Environment: The large red-eared slider is quite adaptable to its environment. As long as the water quality is kept clean and the water temperature is maintained between 20-30°C, they will thrive.

Feeding: The red-eared slider is an omnivorous animal. Caretakers can feed them small fish, shrimp, bloodworms, earthworms, and other similar foods, or they can opt to feed them synthetic feed.

What to Pay Attention to When Raising a Red-eared Slider

  1. Water Level Height: Red-eared sliders cannot live in water that is too deep. Even adult red-eared sliders should have a water level no more than twice the height of their carapace. If the water level is higher than this, they may risk choking or drowning.
  2. Basking Platform: Red-eared sliders have a habit of basking in the sun. Caretakers need to provide a basking platform where they can climb up and soak up the sun whenever they wish. However, the basking time should not be too long—about two hours per day is sufficient. The sunlight should not be too intense, and it is best to choose the morning or evening sunlight for them.
