Expert Answer
Manta rays are fish. They are a type of cartilaginous fish, also known as devil rays or blanket rays.
Manta rays have a very different appearance from other fish. They are flat-bodied, with highly developed pectoral fins on either side that resemble wings.
Although manta rays may look fierce, their temperament is generally gentle.
Sometimes, manta rays leap out of the upper levels of the ocean, with a maximum leap height of 1.5 to 2 meters.
When Do Manta Rays Reproduce?
Manta rays reproduce after they have fully matured, usually between December and April each year. The ideal water temperature for reproduction is between 26-29°C. During mating season, manta rays will gather in groups in shallow coastal waters. During this time, male manta rays continuously chase female manta rays. After about 20 minutes of pursuit, the female will slow down, allowing the male to move forward and mate. Once mating is successful, the male immediately leaves. Another male manta ray will then approach and repeat the process. However, a female manta ray will only accept mating from two male manta rays at most. After 13 months, the female will give birth to baby manta rays.
