Step 1: Walk around the pigeon loft with the young pigeons to help them familiarize themselves with the environment inside and outside the loft, and to remember the location of their home. Step 2: When the pigeons are hungry, set up some simple commands to direct them, training their obedience, and making obedience a habit in preparation for long-distance releases. Step 3: After sufficient preparation, gradually start increasing the release distance.
- How to Train Pigeons for Release
The process of releasing pigeons and having them return to the loft is also known as home flying. To train home flying, follow these steps:
(1) Use food to guide the young pigeons in becoming familiar with the environment around the loft, choosing a location near the loft for their release. Repeat the release at the same place multiple times, allowing them to gradually become familiar with it.
(2) When the pigeons are hungry or empty-stomached, set up some commands. Once the pigeons perform the correct behavior according to the commands, feed them. Pigeons are sensitive to sounds, so it’s best to use vocal commands to train their obedience.
(3) After adequate preparation, you can start gradually increasing the release distance. Begin with a distance of one kilometer, and release pigeons in the four directions around the loft. After they become familiar with the area, try releasing them from even farther locations.
- Precautions for Training Releases
(1) Choose the right pigeons for the release training. Generally speaking, young pigeons are easier to tame than adult pigeons, so it’s better to select young pigeons for release training.
(2) Do not rush the training. It’s important to proceed step by step and not force the pigeons into training, which could cause them to become resistant, anxious, or exhausted. Let them gradually adapt.
(3) In addition to focusing on the training itself, pay attention to rest. Regularly give the pigeons baths to help them relax. Only when they are well-rested can they fully engage in training.
