Donkeys reproduce either through natural mating or artificial insemination. Donkeys reach sexual maturity at 12 to 15 months of age, when their reproductive organs are fully developed, and they begin producing cells capable of growth and secreting sex hormones. At this point, they are ready to mate or undergo artificial insemination.
1. Breeding Methods of Donkeys
Donkeys reproduce through natural mating or artificial insemination. By 12 to 15 months of age, donkeys reach sexual maturity, and their reproductive organs are nearly fully developed. At this stage, they start producing reproductive cells and secreting sex hormones, which allows them to mate or undergo artificial insemination to produce offspring.
When a female donkey enters estrus, the male donkey will gradually approach and mate with her. The mating process typically lasts around 1 to 1.5 minutes. Since the estrus period of female donkeys is not consistent, ovulation time is also irregular. Female donkeys generally ovulate 3 to 5 days after entering estrus, making it an optimal time for artificial insemination to increase the chances of fertilization.
2. Postpartum Management of Female Donkeys
- After giving birth, the female donkey’s genital area needs to be cleaned and disinfected, and care should be taken to prevent mosquito bites, as this could lead to infections in the genital area. Additionally, the female donkey should be provided with water immediately after birth to prevent dehydration.
- For the first 5 to 6 days after delivery, feed should be selected for its high nutritional content and easy digestibility. During the first 7 to 14 days postpartum, the amount of forage should be controlled, gradually increasing it. Generally, normal feeding can resume around day 10.
